Punters.com.au hopes to become Australia’s top racing site and is well on its way to achieving that goal.
The website turned over more than $5 million last financial year and employs 15 people.
For the financial year ending 2014, the racing website pulled in $3.1 million – meaning it jumps up from 26th spot to number 23 on the Smart50 this year.
Founder Luc Pettett told SmartCompany he founded the business because he wanted punters to have access to quality horse racing tips.
While many people told him it was a bad idea for the business, this only made Pettett more eager to succeed.
“Laser sharp focus is critical to grow your business,” he says.
“Timing is also essential, you don’t want to be late to the party or, if you do, you must make a grand entrance.”
An interesting fact about Punters.com.au is that Pettett didn’t know anything about horses when he started the business.
He didn’t even know how to read a form guide.
However, Pettett learnt on the job fast and Punters.com.au has grown by 205% over the past three years.
As for what the future holds, Pettett previously told SmartCompanyhe hopes his business will become “the Google of horse racing”.
“If you look at Google and their vision to organise the world’s information, we want to bring the same vision to the racing experience,” he says.
“We want to be the branding for horse racing.”
