Motorola introduces Google Android phone

Motorola has unveiled its first mobile developed with Google’s Android software, the ‘Dext’.

Known as the ‘Cliq’ in the US, the phone has a slide out mini-keyboard, five megapixel camera with video capture, 2 GB memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access and GPS technology.

But its biggest sell point is the new Motoblur software, which integrates contacts, emails, text messages and updates and photos from social networks onto the screen simultaneously, in real time.

Motorola cancelled other phones planned for this year to concentrate resources on the Dext, which analysts have called a ‘make or break’ release for the company’s market share.

But the social networking features have received mixed reviews. “Having all information like Facebook updates, tweets and emails constantly streamed to your home screen is completely overwhelming,” wrote CNET senior editor Bonnie Cha.

The Dext will retail in Australia later this year.
