A new online game in India is attracting a huge Facebook fan base. Angry Brides, inspired by the popular game Angry Birds, seeks to highlight illegal dowry demands.
The game, which was launched last month as a free application on Facebook, sees an angry bride attacking prospective grooms with household objects in response to their dowry demands.
The homepage of the game shows an eight-armed woman who is holding items that could be used as weapons such as a shoe, a pan and a rolling pin.
A caption below reads: “A woman will give you strength, care and all the love you need… NOT dowry!”
As the player proceeds through the various levels of the game, different weapons are available for the bride to target her three potential husbands – a doctor, an engineer and a pilot.
Each hit gives the player a score, which adds up in the “anti-dowry fund”. There have already been around 300,000 Facebook “likes” for the game, highlighting how popular it is.
“The game is a way to throw spotlight on the issue and ask people to stand up against this. But we wanted to do it in an innovative, fun way that engages the users,” a spokesperson says.
Can you think of other ways to add fun elements to old customs, if not in a game then in another form?
